“The ultimate significance in life comes not from something external, but from something internal.”
― Tony Robbins, Life Coach, Entrepreneur, Investor, Philanthropist
According to Master Coach, Tony Robbins, whatever emotion you’re after, whatever vehicle you pursue, whether it’s building a business, getting married, raising a family or travelling the world, there are essentially six basic, universal needs that make us tick and drive all human behaviour.
The premise behind his teachings on Basic Human Needs Psychology (as Robbins calls it) is that every single person in this world have these same six needs, but each of us values these needs in different ways, and each of us has varied beliefs about what it means to satisfy those needs.
And all of this works together to become the driving force behind everything we do and it determines the direction of our lives.
What this essentially means is that every single thing you do, or your partner does, can be understood by understanding these six basic human needs on a deeper level.
People don’t just do what they do for no reason.
Human Needs Psychology argues that every behaviour, choice, and action can be traced back to a fundamental human need we are trying to meet or satisfy internally.
This is also why I always get my coaching clients to do a short basic human needs assessment (based on Robbins’ Basic Human Needs Psychology as taught by Robbins-Madanes Training Centre) before we start any work together.
The results give me tremendous insight into them long before I’ve met them in person.
Moreover, it’s always fascinating to see how their “stories” line up with the outcome of this assessment.
Most of their personal challenges, troubles, problems and issues tend to flow from unmet internal needs.
If this sounds interesting and you would like to learn more about what drives your behaviour, I would like to give you a chance to find out.
I’ve posted an online version of the assessment of the usually longer offline version below, which you can take for free.
